A Note Before We Begin. This is not a textbook. I have written one of those — a long, careful, science-grounded guide to the ecology and practice of ecosystem restoration. This is the other book. The one that lives underneath the science.
What you hold is an attempt to say something that technical language can't quite reach: that the relationship between human beings and the living world is broken, that it can be repaired, and that the repair is among the most meaningful things a person can do with their time on Earth.
I have spent thirty years doing this work — in the native plant nursery of southern Ontario, in the urban corridors of Toronto, in the tropical dry forests of the Yucatan. I am a scientist, a practitioner, and a person who has been cracked open repeatedly by grief over what is being lost. All three are required.
This book moves between registers — sometimes lyrical, sometimes raw, sometimes the quiet voice of someone kneeling in soil trying to understand what it needs. That is how I actually experience this work. No single tone can hold it all.
The poems that open each chapter are my own, written over the course of the same thirty years. They arose the way I write — without editing, from the truth of the moment. I offer them not as ornament but as evidence: this is what the work does to a person who pays attention.
Chapter One: The Thin Blue Line
I can show you the photos and videos but I cannot let you hear the bison close and feel the quickening of my heart the bite of the tundra wind the awe of a sunrise over the mountains the shaking of the earth near a waterfall the joy of seeing a whale blow the mist on my cheek the numbness of an icy swim the stillness of the land… a sense of connection with soil, plant, rock and creatures that sense of vastness in the prairie, ocean, tundra and forest and the smallness beside giant tree or mountain that puts us in place the groundlessness of it all constantly changing nothing to hold on to and getting comfortable there to ground yourself in the land one truly understands the magic and sacredness of this world
The poem above is not a poem about absence. It is a poem about what photographs cannot carry.
You can see, in a photograph, the Arctic tundra stretching to the horizon. You can see the colours — the reds and oranges of dwarf willow in autumn, the pale blue of the sky, the dark soil exposed where permafrost has melted. But you cannot feel the wind that comes off that landscape with a cold so particular it seems to have a personality. You cannot feel the way it makes you small, and the way that smallness is not diminishment but orientation — a reminder of what you are and where you are in the scale of things.
I have stood in the tundra. I have stood in the Carolinian forest of southern Ontario in May when the trilliums were up, and the wood thrushes were singing. I have stood on the bank of a Yucatan cenote as a boa constrictor moved through the water 3 meters away, unhurried, absolute. In each of these moments, something happened that was not merely aesthetic. Something shifted in how I understood myself.
The stillness of the land does this. It recalibrates. It reminds you that you are embedded in something vastly older and larger and more complex than anything human civilization has produced — and that you are not a visitor to it but a participant in it, shaped by the same forces, made of the same elements, subject to the same cycles.
I begin this book here because I think this is where everything else comes from. Not from the science, though the science is essential. Not from the policy, though the policy matters. From this: the direct, embodied, irreducible experience of being present in the living world and allowing it to matter to you.
There is a photograph I return to when I need to remember the stakes.
It was taken from low orbit — the altitude where the curvature of Earth becomes visible. You can see the planet's edge against the black of space, and along that edge, thin as the rim of a soap bubble: the atmosphere. The thin blue line. Everything that lives, every creature that has ever existed, inhabits that thread and the skin of soil below it.
In 2009, a team of scientists attempted to quantify what we have done to that thread. They identified nine Earth system processes that keep the planet stable — climate, biodiversity, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, freshwater, land use, ocean acidification, the ozone layer, and novel chemical entities. They proposed the safe operating boundaries for each. By 2025, we had crossed seven of the nine.
Seven of nine. The ozone layer pulled back from the edge through coordinated international action — one genuine success. The others worse than before, and worsening.
I tell you this not to paralyze you. I tell you because the grief that comes from knowing it, from letting it land fully, is not the end of the story. It is, as the poet Mary Oliver wrote, the beginning — the moment the heart breaks open and never closes again to the rest of the world. That breaking open is the prerequisite for everything that follows.
The planet is not finished. The creatures are not finished. The living systems that regulate Earth's chemistry and climate are damaged but not destroyed. And the thing I have spent thirty years learning, and believe with the same certainty I believe anything: damaged living systems, given the conditions they need, recover.
The thin blue line holds. Barely. And on this side of it, people are choosing to do the work that helps it hold.
This book is about those people and how to become one of them.
Chapter Two: What the Land Remembers

And then this one, which arrived separately but belongs beside it:

These poems were written about real places. Fields I watched change. Landscapes I had known with their full communities of life and then returned to find diminished — quieter, emptier, less.
The grief in them is real, and I do not want to soften it. The loss is real. But I want to tell you something about what those fields hold that the poems don't quite say.
Underneath the silence, there is memory.
The first thing I do on any new restoration site is walk it without a clipboard.
I learned this over years of running a native plant nursery and consulting on restoration projects — that the first knowledge comes from the walk, not from the data. What your feet tell you. What your eyes pick up without being directed. Where the water has written its history in the topography. What the weeds are saying about the soil below them.
On a 95-acre farm in Ontario that became one of my defining restoration projects, the first walk told me everything. The compaction was physical — a resistance you felt through the soles of your boots, the quality of pressed sand that has been driven over by heavy equipment for decades. The water moved across the surface rather than into it. The weeds were reading the soil conditions like a language: Path rush in the wet corners, quackgrass on the bare, disturbed slopes.
What I was looking for, underneath all of it, was what the land remembered.
Soil is not inert. A teaspoon of healthy prairie soil contains more organisms than there are people on Earth. Bacteria in the billions. Fungi in networks that extend for metres in every direction. An entire community of decomposers and grazers and predators doing the slow, invisible work that makes everything above ground possible.
When land is degraded — ploughed, compacted, saturated with agricultural chemicals, stripped of organic matter — this community is suppressed. Not destroyed. Suppressed. Even in the most degraded fields, below the plough layer, there are survivors: fungal spores dormant for years, bacterial colonies in microscopic pores that the worst disturbance couldn't reach.
And then there is the seed bank. Seeds from native species present before the land was converted remain viable in the soil for years or decades, waiting for conditions that allow them to germinate. I have seen a drained wetland, when water levels are restored, produce a flush of native emergent vegetation that nobody planted — cattails, sedges, native bulrushes coming up from seed that had been dormant for thirty years. The land knew what it wanted to become. It was waiting for permission.
Have you ever really looked at a leaf — the way the veins divide and divide again until they seem to disappear? Marvelling at how the plant feeds itself. Each leaf of grass is like a fingerprint, unique unto itself. And then you look up at a vast field and are overwhelmed by the preciousness of every blade.
This is what the land holds. Not just memory of what it was, but the potential of what it can become. The biology is there, suppressed but present. The seeds are there, dormant but alive. The processes that drive recovery are intact even where recovery has been interrupted.
The land is not dead. It is waiting.
Chapter Three: Learning to See

This poem was written in a specific place, with a specific tree. But it describes something that happens, I think, in any landscape where you are willing to stop performing arrival and actually arrive.
I was not thinking, in that moment, about ecology. I was not cataloguing species, assessing soil conditions, or considering which management interventions would be appropriate. I was breathing. I was present. And something happened in that presence that is hard to describe in scientific language: the boundary between me and the place I was standing in became less fixed. I became, for a moment, part of a system rather than an observer of one.
Ecologists call this autopoiesis — the self-organizing, self-maintaining quality of living systems. I call it what it felt like: kinship. Recognition. Coming home to something I hadn't known I'd been away from.
I did not grow up planning to be a restoration ecologist. I grew up noticing things.
The smell of particular soil in particular weather. The way certain plants claimed certain corners of a landscape. Which birds appeared at which times of year, and which habitats they preferred. These observations accumulated for years before I had the vocabulary to organize them — before I understood that what I was developing was ecological literacy.
Ecological literacy is not the same as knowing the names of things, though names help. It is a way of seeing relationships. It is the capacity to look at a landscape and read it the way you would read a face — not just what's there but what it means, what it's in response to, what it's moving toward.
When I began my master's research on Nova Scotia lakes, this way of seeing became a formal practice. The lakes told their stories through their chemistry. One lake was clear, alive, productive. Another, just a few kilometres away, is nearly empty — acidified, depleted. The difference wasn't in the lakes. It was in everything upstream: the land use, the bedrock chemistry, the history of acid deposition, the vegetation that filtered or failed to filter the water running into them.
The lakes were reading their landscapes. Everything that happened in the watershed was written into the water.
This is ecology: the study of how everything connects to everything else. Not a platitude but a precise description. Nothing exists in isolation. Change one element, and you change others. Remove a predator, and prey populations explode. Remove a decomposer, and nutrients stop cycling. Remove a pollinator, and plant reproduction fails. The web is real, and every thread matters.
The way I teach ecological literacy is less like a lecture and more like a walk.
I take people to a field. I ask them to stop and just look — not to identify anything, not to classify, just to look at the whole, the way you look at a painting before you examine brushstrokes.
Then I ask questions. Where does the water go when it rains? Where are the darkest patches of soil? What do the plants in each zone have in common? What are the birds doing?
The questions have answers. And the answers, taken together, form a picture — not of isolated features but of a system. A community of organisms responding to physical conditions, shaped by history, moving in a direction that succession is determining.
By the end of the walk, people are seeing things differently. They will see things differently for the rest of their lives. The world becomes more textured, more relational — and more legible. Once you can read a landscape, you can begin to understand what it needs.
But something else develops alongside the technical literacy, something harder to name. A kinship. When you spend enough time in a landscape, attending carefully, something shifts. It stops being scenery and starts being company. You are not studying it. You are in conversation with it.
And a good conversation requires listening, not just speaking.
Chapter Four: The Nursery Years
The world has come to life quickly this year. Spring flowers bursting from the ground and buds popping on the trees. Running soft seeds through my hands feeling the pure potentiality of life. Seeding vast meadows of grass and wildflower to offer to you. Nurturing fragile seedlings that heal the earth, giving breath to us who breathe.
For twenty years, I grew native plants.
Up to half a million seedlings a year, from three hundred and fifty species, on a forty-acre farm in Ontario's Carolinian zone. The work was physical — the bending and straightening, the carrying of trays, the hours on hands and knees transplanting and weeding. But it was primarily a practice of attention. What does this species need? What are the conditions for germination? What is preventing establishment here? Sensing what the plants need.
Native plant propagation is a particular kind of knowledge — it sits between ecology and horticulture, between science and art. The textbooks and experimentation will tell you the stratification requirements of a given species: how many weeks of cold, wet conditions are needed to break dormancy. But they can't tell you why seeds from one mother plant germinate more vigorously than another, or why a batch that stratified correctly still fails to come up. That knowledge comes from years of watching what actually happens, as opposed to what should.
This looking — this specific, attending, wondering looking — is what the nursery years cultivated in me more than any technique.
What the work taught me was that species have character.
Each one has particular requirements, particular timing, particular responses to conditions. Wild columbine germinates prolifically and forgives a range of conditions. Yellow orchid is an impossibly particular — specific mycorrhizal partner, precise soil chemistry, exact moisture regime, and will fail on a site that looks perfect by every measurable criterion if one invisible requirement is missing. Black-eyed Susan grows anywhere. Turtlehead requires cool, wet soils, a specific pH, and a light regime that mimics the edge of a woodland stream.
Each species is a specialist in its own way, shaped by millennia of relationship with a specific set of conditions. Working with this particularity changed how I understood restoration. Early on, I thought of species as interchangeable units — native plants to fill native plant-shaped holes. I learned this was wrong. Ecosystems are not random assemblages. They are communities shaped by evolutionary history and by specific relationships that have developed among organisms over thousands of years. The mycorrhizal fungus a native prairie grass depends on is not a generic fungus — it is a specific partner, co-evolved, locally adapted. The pollinator an orchid has evolved to attract is not any bee — it is a particular species responding to particular floral cues at a particular time of year.
When you think this way, the goal of restoration changes. You are not trying to put native plants back. You are trying to rebuild a community — to recreate, as fully as possible, the network of relationships that made a place function. The plants are not the goal. The relationships are the goal. The plants are the expression of those relationships.
There is something about working with seeds that reshapes your relationship to time.
A seed is, among other things, a bet on the future. The plant that produced it will not see most of its seeds germinate. The germinated seedling will not see the plant it becomes. The plant will not see its descendants colonize an expanding prairie.
Running soft seeds through my hands — feeling their weight, their smell, the particular texture of each species — I understood that I was holding not just a potential plant but a chain of consequences stretching forward beyond my horizon. A chain that could run forward only if someone kept it going.
I have planted trees that I will never see mature. Prairie plants whose descendants will anchor a grassland community for centuries if the land is protected. These are investments in a future I won't inhabit, made on behalf of creatures I will never meet, in service of a relationship between humans and land that I believe is worth maintaining.
This is not noble self-sacrifice. It is a recognition of what we actually are: organisms embedded in systems that extend in time as well as space. Our actions have consequences we cannot see. The question is only what kind of consequences we will choose to have.
I was not growing plants. I was growing relationships. I just didn't have the words for it yet.
Chapter Five: The Meadowlark and the Corridor

Toronto's Meadoway is sixteen kilometres long and thirty metres wide.
It runs through the north end of the city under hydro transmission towers — a strip of land that the power company owned but didn't need for anything except keeping trees from growing under the lines. For decades, it had been managed as turf grass: mown regularly, maintained as a green corridor through the suburban landscape that supported almost nothing ecologically.
The idea was simple: stop mowing, reseed with native meadow species, and manage for a grassland community. The reality was considerably more complex.
The first challenge was the weed seed bank — decades of management had deposited enormous quantities of agricultural weed seeds in the upper soil. Before native species could establish, we had to deal with this bank: seed bank depletion, targeted management of the most aggressive invasives, and careful timing of native seeding to give the native community its best chance.
The second challenge was scale. Sixteen kilometres is not a garden. You cannot hand-weed sixteen kilometres. Restoration at this scale requires systems thinking — understanding the spatial patterns that will drive recovery across the whole corridor, identifying priority sections, accepting that some areas will establish better than others and designing management that takes advantage of natural variation rather than fighting it.
But the challenge I remember most is cultural, not ecological: helping people understand what we were doing and why.
The corridor passed through dozens of neighbourhoods, each with its own relationship to the land.
Some residents were enthusiastic — people who remembered what meadows looked like before they were replaced by turf, who had been waiting for exactly this. Others were alarmed. They wanted the grass short. They associated tall grass and wildflowers with neglect rather than intention, with loss of control rather than ecological recovery.
There is a deep assumption in urban culture that nature — real nature, complex and self-organizing — is something that happens elsewhere. Not in the narrow corridor between houses and hydro towers where people walk their dogs. Nature in those spaces is expected to be managed: appropriate, bounded, safe.
What the Meadoway invited was a different relationship. Not managed nature but assisted nature — something genuinely wild in character, doing its own ecological work, not under our control in the way a garden is, and more beautiful and more alive for not being so.
This invitation required patience and the humility to listen to what neighbours actually needed. Some concerns were legitimate — sightlines, access, and the management of plants that cause allergic reactions. Others dissolved on their own when people saw what was happening. When the wildflowers bloomed in year two, the monarchs appeared in numbers that hadn't been seen in that neighbourhood in decades. When people started walking through the corridor to look at things rather than just to get somewhere.
In year twelve, a pair of Eastern Meadowlarks nested in the corridor.
I want to tell you what this meant. Eastern Meadowlarks are grassland obligates. They are interior-dependent — they will not nest near edges; they need enough distance from the surrounding landscape to be confident of undisturbed space. Their populations in Ontario have collapsed alongside the collapse of native grassland habitat. They are species at risk.
For meadowlarks to nest in the Meadoway meant the corridor had become large enough and ecologically complex enough to meet the requirements of a species that demands genuine grassland interior. They had assessed it. They had decided it was suitable. They had committed their reproductive effort to it — the deepest possible endorsement a bird can make of a habitat.
They chose this. We made it possible, but they chose it.
That distinction matters. It is the whole point. We made an opening. The life that had been displaced found its way back through it.
The Meadoway taught me something about urban restoration I hadn't fully understood before: cities are not separate from nature. They are occupied by the same organisms — or they could be, if the habitat is there. When we change what cities offer, things come back. Not all at once. Not everything. But things come back.
And this changes what is possible. Not just ecologically, but in people. The child who grows up knowing a meadow in their neighbourhood, who learns the names of the wildflowers and watches the monarchs pass through in September, who hears the meadowlark and learns what it means that it's there — that child has a different relationship to the living world than a child who grew up knowing only turf.
The restoration of habitats and the restoration of relationships occur simultaneously in the same places. Each one requires the other. The meadow needs the people who will protect it. The people need the meadow to teach them what is worth protecting.
Nature does not wait for perfect conditions. She found the best available, and it was enough.
Chapter Six: Going South

In 2015, I moved to the Yucatan.
My partner, Sophia and I acquired thirty-nine hectares on the edge of the tropical dry forest zone — a former cattle ranch, compacted red soil, a tangle of thorny shrubs and very little else. The forest that had covered this land before clearing was gone. The soil biology was stripped. What remained was degraded land and the question of what it could become.
I had restored temperate systems — prairie, wetland, meadow, Carolinian forest, urban corridor. I had never restored a tropical dry forest. I arrived with twenty years of ecological understanding and almost no specific knowledge of what I was walking into.
The first thing I did was walk the property without a clipboard.
The compaction was worse than anything I had encountered in Ontario — cattle grazing on thin tropical soils produces a density of devastation that temperate systems rarely match. The non-native grasses, primarily, created a fire risk. In a year without managed intervention, those grasses would carry fire across the property, killing any establishing native trees, resetting succession to zero, perpetuating the grass-fire cycle that keeps degraded tropical landscapes locked in degradation.
But there were survivors. In the rocky outcrops and archeological ruins, where cattle couldn't graze efficiently, in the margins and corners, native trees still stood — old individuals, some of them. No juveniles, no seedlings. Just the ancient remnants of a forest community that had been waiting, in the only way they could, for conditions to change.
The same story I had read in Ontario fields. A community suppressed, not destroyed. Waiting.
Sophia had described, in her own words, what it meant to be in this land — to feel the energy of nature flowing through the roots of the trees, to be anchored in rock and root and soil, the soul rising to the infinite while sky and earth become one. This is not the language of a restoration ecologist. It is the language of someone in a genuine relationship with a landscape — the kind of relationship that precedes and makes possible every technical intervention that follows.
We were not developers. We were not settlers in the conquering sense. We were people who had come to listen, to learn, and to offer what we could toward the recovery of something older than either of us by thousands of years.
What transferred from Canada to Mexico was not what I expected.
I expected the technical knowledge to transfer — seed germination requirements, soil amendment protocols, planting techniques — and much of it did, modified. What surprised me was how completely the fundamental orientation transferred. The questions: What is preventing recovery? What is the seed bank holding? What is this land trying to become? What does it need from me?
These questions are not temperate or tropical. They are ecological, and ecology is the same in its essentials everywhere, even when it differs completely in its specifics.
The specifics required humility. The tropical dry forest has a different relationship to water than anything I had worked with in Ontario. Six months of rain, six months of drought — and the drought bakes the soil surface to temperatures that would kill temperate seedlings in hours. Bare-soil planting fails. Nurse plants — fast-growing, drought-tolerant pioneer species — had to come first, creating the shade and microclimate that allowed the forest community to reassemble beneath them.
I also had to learn what the land itself knew, through the people who had known it longest.
The Yucatan is a Mayan land, inhabited and understood for thousands of years. The ecological knowledge embedded in that tradition — which plants grow where and why, which practices maintain soil and water and forest over generations — is knowledge I couldn't have accessed through any scientific literature. It required relationships. It required the willingness to arrive as a student rather than an expert.
Two ways of knowing, used together, give a picture closer to full than either provides alone. The science gave me the framework. The traditional knowledge from neighbours gave me the particulars that only long inhabitation produces. The land was the teacher of both.
Chapter Seven: The Forest Returns

The first tree we planted was a chakah — Bursera simaruba, known locally as the naked tree for the way its red-orange bark peels to reveal green living tissue underneath. Drought-tolerant, fast-growing, deeply rooted, providing food and habitat for a remarkable range of wildlife. In Maya tradition, it is a tree of great significance — used in ceremony, in medicine, in the marking of sacred sites.
We planted it in the rainy season, when the soil was soft enough to receive it, in a section where the remnant native trees still present provided a seed source for natural regeneration. By the time the dry season came, it had established a root system deep enough to access moisture below the dried surface.
It survived.
This seems like a small thing. It is not. In the context of a severely degraded tropical site, the survival of a planted native tree is the opening of a door. The chakah's canopy provides shade that reduces soil surface temperature. Its roots break compaction and begin building organic matter. Its flowers and fruit attract birds, bats, and insects that carry seeds from surrounding areas. One tree is not a forest. But one tree is the beginning of the conditions that make a forest possible.
In the years that followed, we planted thousands of trees. We built a nursery on the property, propagating from locally collected seed to maintain local genetic provenance. We established monitoring plots across different zones. We managed invasive grasses by strategically planting shade-producing natives to outcompete them over time.
And we watched what the forest wanted to do on its own.
Natural regeneration on severely degraded land is not automatic. The seed rain from surrounding fragments is limited. The soil biology that supports germination is compromised. But it is not zero. And in the areas where we managed invasive pressure and provided minimal nurse plant cover, native seedlings began to appear that we hadn't planted. Species we hadn't yet established in the nursery. Species arriving from the surrounding landscape, carried by birds, bats and wind.
The forest was already trying to come back. We were clearing the obstacles.
I want to tell you about the boa.
In our third year, Sophia found a boa constrictor — large, three metres or more in length — coiled at the edge of the cenote, eating a pigeon. Not a surprise in itself; boas are common in the region. What surprised her was the evidence that it had been there a while. The shed skins. The bird remains. It had found what it needed on our property and had been using it quietly, without our knowledge.
We left it alone. It was a resident.
Later that year, evidence of a grizon moving through the recovering sections. And coatis, and an anteater in the trees at night. The camera trap set up near our wildlife ponds captured images that made us both go still: an ocelot moving through the dark, using our property as part of its territory.
We had not introduced these animals. They had found us. They were responding to the improving conditions — the growing complexity of vegetation, the availability of food and cover and the passage that a degraded ranch does not provide and a recovering forest does.
They were choosing to be here.
That is the most profound thing about restoration, and the hardest to convey to someone who hasn't experienced it: the moment when the work shifts from something you are doing to the land to something the land is doing, and you are witnessing.
The tree that bends with the wind — rooted in equanimity, making love to what tosses it, joyful in the creak and moan — is not performing resilience. It is living it. This is what a recovering ecosystem looks like from the inside. Not stability but dynamic balance. Not stillness but deep rootedness in motion.
You made the conditions. The forest made the rest.
Chapter Eight: Kinship
We are just energy. We think this body of ours is so permanent that we say mine. My body. But we are a constant flow of energy in and out. When we resist the flow or hold on, then we get diseases. Not a single cell in your body is the one you were born with. We are constantly changing. Accepting that flow is critical to understanding because we do not exist alone. We are connected to the world around us and to that energy flow. Deeper still is the energy in all living and nonliving energy in the universe. It is embedded in everything. We are a part of it. There is no separation between anything in the universe. The universe is full of unique and beautiful expressions of That. How will you express yourself?
The atoms in your body were forged in the heat of a star. Not metaphorically. Literally. The iron in your blood, the calcium in your bones, the carbon that forms the backbone of every organic molecule in your body — these were produced in stellar nucleosynthesis and scattered through space when stars exploded. You are, in the most direct physical sense, made of stardust.
You are also made of the Earth you have eaten. Every element in your body came through the food web at some point — through the fungi that digested minerals from the rock, plants that pulled nutrients from soil, through animals that ate plants, through the water that moved through watersheds and aquifers and the bodies of other organisms before it moved through yours. You are recycled butterflies, plants, rocks, streams, wolf fur, broken down to their smallest parts and rebuilt, again and again, into whatever living form needs those atoms next.
You are not living on Earth. You are Earth.
The separation between human beings and the rest of the living world is not a fact of nature. It is a story we have told ourselves, particularly over the past few centuries of industrial civilization — a story so pervasive that it has become invisible, felt as obvious rather than chosen.
But it is chosen. And other ways of understanding have always existed.
In the Anishinaabe tradition, the concept of minaadendamowin — mutual respect — encompasses all beings, living and nonliving. The trees, the rivers, the stones are not resources to be managed but relatives to be respected. The Mayan understanding of the milpa — the traditional agricultural system of corn, beans, and squash growing together — is not merely a farming technique. It is the expression of a relationship: these three plants support each other, as human communities do, and the farmer's relationship to the milpa is not extraction but reciprocity.
The mycorrhizal fungi that connect the roots of forest trees — allowing them to transfer carbon and phosphorus and water between individuals, to support struggling seedlings, to signal each other about stress — are not performing a service. They are the forest, in a sense. The boundary between the individual tree and the fungal network it depends on is not a boundary. It is a relationship so intimate that separating them is conceptually meaningless.
We are embedded in networks like this. We depend on the soil food web for every bite of food. We depend on pollinators for the fruits and vegetables that sustain us. We depend on forests and oceans to regulate the atmospheric chemistry that makes our physiology possible. We depend on the entire web of ecological relationships, stretching back to the dawn of photosynthesis, for every breath we take.
We are not separate. We are dependent. And dependency, honestly acknowledged, is another word for relationship.
What does kinship require of us?
It requires something different from the rescue narrative — the idea that we, as the species that caused the damage, are now going to fix it with our superior knowledge and technology. That narrative, even when well-intentioned, reproduces the separation it's trying to heal. We are not rescuers. We are participants in a community that is trying to recover.
Kinship requires reciprocity. You cannot take indefinitely without giving back. Restoration is reciprocity in practice — rebuilding soil carbon, restoring nutrient cycles, reestablishing species communities, and returning water to the systems that need it.
Kinship requires listening. The land has preferences. Ecosystems have tendencies. The seed bank in a recovered wetland tells you what the native community wants to be. The succession of plant species in an abandoned field indicates the direction the ecosystem is moving. Restoration requires learning to read these signals and to work with them.
And kinship requires grief. The grief of understanding what has been lost. Not wallowing — grief that becomes permanent mourning is paralyzing. But the willingness to feel the weight of what has happened, to let it matter, is part of what transforms the relationship from transactional to genuine.

This is the ground I am trying to stand on. Not the ground of certainty or achievement, but the ground of relationship — rooted enough to bend, present enough to witness, open enough to be changed by what you find.
The grief and the joy are not opposites. They are the same orientation toward the world. One that takes the living world seriously enough to mourn it and seriously enough to celebrate it. The wound and the healer, as I have come to understand it, are part of the same organism. We broke this. We can help it heal. These are not separate facts. They are the full arc of relationship.
Chapter Nine: The Ripple

When there is nothing left, awareness and love remain.
Robert Kennedy spoke about ripples of hope in 1966, in a speech to students in apartheid South Africa. He said that each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, they send forth a tiny ripple of hope — and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls.
He was talking about justice. I am talking about ecosystems. But the mathematics is the same.
One person can restore a small area. One person can train a volunteer team. One person can consult on a project and see it through. But the knowledge gained across thirty years of doing that work — the ecological understanding, the practical judgment, the hard-won lessons about what actually works and what doesn't — that knowledge can move much faster and much further than any one person can travel.
When I think about the multiplier, I think about it in specific terms.
A course I teach reaches forty students in a given year. If ten of those students go on to significant restoration work — modest projects, fifty acres each — that's five hundred acres directly influenced in the following year. Those students will each, over their careers, teach others. Some of those will teach others. The knowledge moves outward.
I have watched this happen. Students from early courses who are now running their own restoration projects, supervising volunteers, and running nurseries. People who would not have made those choices — or would not have made them well — without the ecological grounding that a serious course provides. The ripple is real and measurable over time.
But the multiplier is larger than direct teaching suggests. Ecological literacy is not just a professional skill. It is a way of seeing that changes every decision a person makes about land. The farmer who understands succession manages their fencerows differently. The urban planner who understands connectivity designs differently. The homeowner who understands the soil food web stops using pesticides and starts building organic matter. None of these people may ever call themselves restoration ecologists. But their relationship to the land changes, and the land they are responsible for responds.
Drew Dellinger, in his poem Hieroglyphic Stairway, writes of waking at 3 a.m. because his great-great-grandchildren won't let him sleep, asking in dreams: What did you do while the Earth was unravelling?
That question is not rhetorical. It has an answer. And the answer begins here, with the decision to learn, to practice and to share what you learn.
This moment is here Then gone And another moment arises
This is the gift and the urgency of it. The moment to act is not some future configuration when conditions are better, or the crisis is clearer, or you feel more prepared. The moment is this one. The knowledge you have now is enough to begin. The land near you is waiting.
When there is nothing left — when the ego's defences dissolve, when the performance of certainty dissolves, when the story of separation dissolves — awareness and love remain. These are the instruments of restoration. Not just of ecosystems, but of ourselves.
Chapter Ten: An Invitation

You have read my poetry, and you understand, I think, that I live life fully and genuinely — that I am not afraid of darkness, mine or yours, because I can see the goodness in all people and the light of love dancing in the heart as it does in mine. I dare to let go and follow my dreams. I have touched the depths of sorrow and felt it fully. Tasted the ache of loneliness and grew strong in it. I have touched the centre of my being and touched the universe. I have failed again and again and could have sealed myself off, but I refused to close my heart.
I tell you this because restoration — of ecosystems, of ourselves, of the relationship between human beings and the living world — requires exactly this: the refusal to close the heart in the face of what is hard. The willingness to let it be pierced. The bravery to stay in the grief and the uncertainty rather than running toward the numbing comfort of pretending it isn't there.
This is the invitation.
Not a list of instructions. An invitation to a relationship.
Oriah Mountain Dreamer begins her poem The Invitation with this: It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
What does your heart ache for, in the direction of the living world? That ache is information. It is pointing you toward something.
Maybe it is the memory of a landscape you knew as a child that is now gone. Maybe it is the grief of reading about species going extinct. Maybe it is the visceral wrongness you feel when you see a healthy river turned brown, or a meadow mown to bare turf, or an old tree taken down for a parking lot. Maybe it is something quieter — the sense that the world is less alive than it should be, that something important is missing, that you want to be part of changing that.
That ache is the beginning of a relationship. And a relationship is the beginning of restoration.
Wherever you are, there is land near you that is trying to recover.
It may not look like it. It may look like a parking lot, a mown lawn, a degraded field or a storm drain. But underneath, in the soil, in the surrounding landscape, in the air above — the seeds and spores and organisms that could, given the chance, build something living are present. They are waiting.
You can start where you are.
If you have a garden, plant native species. Research what your regional native plant community looks like, and find ways to approximate it at whatever scale you have. Take out the turf. Stop the pesticides. Let the leaf litter build.
If you have access to rural land, look at the fencerows, the wet corners, the unproductive edges. Talk to a conservation authority or a native plant society. Conversion doesn't happen overnight, but it begins with a conversation and a soil test.
If you are in a city, volunteer with a restoration organization. Join an iNaturalist project. Plant a pollinator garden. Advocate for your parks to be managed for biodiversity rather than tidiness. Know that even the smallest urban habitat is meaningful to the creatures that find it.
And whatever you do: tell someone. Teach what you learn. Pass it on.

This is how I experience the work of restoration — as something that cannot be contained within a category, a profession, or a program. It is a relationship practice that keeps changing me, keeps revealing new aspects of the living world's complexity and resilience, and keeps opening into something larger than any plan I brought to it.
The planet does not need to be saved. It needs to be rejoined.
There is a meadow in the Yucatan that was a cattle ranch ten years ago.
At dusk, the birds come. Species I had not seen in the first year, or the third, or the sixth. They come because the conditions are right. Not perfect. Right. They don't ask who planted what. They ask only: is this place safe? Can I find what I need here?
The answer is yes.
Above it, the thin blue line holds the whole exchange — the oxygen cycling through leaves and lungs, the water moving between cloud and root and cloud again, the chemistry that makes any of this possible. We are part of this. We have always been part of this. The work of restoration is the work of remembering that, and of acting accordingly.
And the moment you act — the moment you drop the stone — the water does what water does.
It carries the energy in every direction. Further than you can see. Longer than you expect. Beyond where you will ever know.
The ripple has already started.
