Species Identification Starter Guide
Ecological fluency is not about knowing Latin names. It is about recognition — the felt knowledge that comes from having met a species repeatedly, in different seasons and conditions, until it becomes familiar, the way a face becomes familiar.
Introduction. You cannot restore what you cannot name. And you cannot name what you have not learned to see. This is the foundational problem in ecological restoration education. People arrive with genuine love for the living world and genuine motivation to help it recover. But without the ability to read the landscape — to look at a hedgerow or a field edge or a patch of scrub and actually know what is there — restoration work remains abstract. You can follow the instructions. You cannot yet think. Ecological fluency changes that. It is not a credential or a qualification. It is a capacity — the ability to move through a landscape and recognize its inhabitants the way you recognize faces in a crowd. Not analyzing. Knowing. This guide builds that capacity over twelve months. One hundred species. Four categories. A method that combines field observation, iNaturalist documentation, and quiet sustained attention over time. By the end of the year, you will know 100 species with genuine familiarity. You will have begun to see the ecological relationships between them. That knowing is where all restoration work begins.
The method in brief. 25 species per category. You choose your own species from each of four categories — plants, birds, insects and fungi, mammals and reptiles — selecting the species most present and accessible in your own landscape. This is not a prescribed list. It is a framework for building a relationship with the specific place you are in. iNaturalist is your field journal. Every species you learn gets documented in iNaturalist — a photograph, a location, a date. Over the year, your observations build a personal record of what you have met, where you met it, and when. The iNaturalist community helps with identification when you are uncertain. Your record becomes a genuine contribution to biodiversity data. Seasons as the curriculum. You do not learn a species once and move on. You return to the same species in different seasons. The oak you documented in summer looks completely different in winter. The bird you identified in breeding plumage is harder to recognize in fall. The fungus that appeared after autumn rain is gone by spring. Returning to species across seasons is what builds genuine familiarity rather than one-time recognition. Attention before identification. Before you open a field guide or check iNaturalist, spend time with what you are looking at. Where is it? What is it doing? What is it associated with? What other species are nearby? The habit of observing before identifying is what separates ecological fluency from checklist-ticking.
Part One: Getting Started
Setting up your iNaturalist account. iNaturalist is a free platform — available at inaturalist.org or as a smartphone app — that allows you to document species observations with photographs, location data, and notes. Its community identification feature means that uncertain identifications are reviewed and confirmed by other naturalists and taxonomic experts worldwide.

- Create a project called "Species Identification Year — [Your Location]"
- Set your default location
Your first observation: Before reading further, go outside and photograph one living thing. Upload it to iNaturalist. This is your beginning.
Choosing your 100 species. Your 100 species are drawn from the landscape you actually inhabit and move through. Not the landscape you wish you had access to. The one outside your door, around your neighbourhood, in the nearest park, field or fragment of semi-natural habitat. This is important. The goal is deep familiarity with a real place. A person who knows 25 plants in their local hedgerow with genuine intimacy is further along the path than a person who has looked at 200 species photographs in a book.
Category 1: Plants (25 species). Start with the plants that are most present in your immediate landscape. If you live in a city, this might mean street trees, park plants, and common weeds. If you live near a semi-natural habitat, it might mean the species that dominate the edges and clearings. If you are already working on a restoration site, choose the native species you are planting and the invasive species you are managing. Guidance for selection: Include a mix of growth forms — trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, grasses, ferns. Include at least 3-4 plants that you currently consider "weeds" or cannot yet name. Those are the ones you most need to know, because they are the ones telling you most clearly about the history and condition of your land. Include at least 3-4 native species that you want to be able to propagate or plant in restoration work.
The practice: find each species in the field before looking it up; photograph the whole plant, the leaf (both surfaces), the stem, the flower if present, the seed if present [Protip: put your hand behind the leaf to help the camera focus]; note habitat, soil type, associated species, aspect, moisture; return to each plant in at least three different seasons.
Category 2: Birds (25 species). Birds are the most accessible entry point for most people. They are present in almost every landscape, they are vocal, and they move — which makes them excellent teachers of attention. Begin with the birds you already recognize. Then extend to the birds most commonly present in your landscape. Do not try to identify birds at a distance before you can identify them close up. Guidance for selection: Include at least 3-4 ground-feeding species, 3-4 tree canopy species, and 2-3 edge or scrub species. Include the most common species first — the ones you see every day but have never actually stopped to look at properly.
The practice: spend at least 5 minutes observing each species before attempting to identify it; learn the call as well as the appearance — many birds are heard before they are seen; note feeding behaviour, habitat preference, what it is eating, and what it is associated with; use iNaturalist for visual documentation and recordings (your own or from apps like Merlin) for calls.
Category 3: Insects and Fungi (25 species). These two groups are combined because they are both frequently overlooked and ecologically fundamental — insects as pollinators and decomposers, and fungi as the invisible architecture of soil biology and forest nutrient cycling. Insects (aim for 12-15 species): Begin with the most visible and commonly encountered — butterflies, bees, hoverflies, beetles, grasshoppers. The ecological question matters as much as the identification. Not just "what is this bee?" but "what is it visiting? What is its association with this plant?" Fungi (aim for 10-13 species): Fungi require different attention than plants or animals. They appear and disappear. The visible fruiting body — the mushroom — is only a temporary expression of a permanent mycelial network that may be many metres wide and many years old. Begin with the most common and distinctive species in your landscape. Document the substrate (what the fungus is growing on), the season, and the associated plant species.
Note: This guide is for ecological observation, not foraging. Do not eat anything you are not 100% certain of.
The practice: for insects, observe for at least 2 minutes before attempting identification; for fungi, photograph cap, gills/pores (underside), stem, base, and substrate; note ecological associations above all else.
Category 4: Mammals and Reptiles (25 species). Mammals are often the hardest category for beginners because many are nocturnal, shy, or simply rarely seen. Camera traps change this equation significantly. If you have access to a camera trap, deploying it for two weeks in a semi-natural area will reveal which mammals are present in the landscape, even when you never see them directly. Guidance for selection: Include the species you have directly observed, plus the species you have evidence of — tracks, scat, burrows, runways through grass. Field signs are as important as direct sightings. For reptiles, patience is the primary tool. Find the basking sites and return to them.
The practice: learn the field signs as well as the animal itself — tracks, scat, burrows, food remains; for camera trap species, note the time of day and the habitat corridor being used; note what other species are associated with each mammal or reptile you encounter.
Part Two: The Twelve-Month Programme
Monthly focus areas. The year is structured around deepening observation rather than adding more species. By month four, you will have encountered most of your 100 species at least once. The remaining eight months are about returning to them — in different seasons, different conditions, different states — until the recognition becomes automatic and the ecological understanding becomes layered.
Months 1-2: Foundation — Encounter and document. Your primary task in the first two months is to encounter each of your 100 species at least once and document them in iNaturalist. Do not worry about deep knowledge yet. Walk your landscape with genuine attention and find what is there. Monthly practice: walk the same route at least twice a week; record every species you encounter that is on your list; note the ones you cannot find — their absence is also information; begin a simple field notebook alongside iNaturalist — pencil sketches, notes on behaviour, habitat associations. By the end of month 2: You should have documented at least 60-70 of your 100 species.
Months 3-4: Deepening — Ecology and association. With most of your species encountered, begin asking the ecological questions. Not just "what is this?" but "what is this doing here? What is it eating? What is eating it? What does its presence tell me about the condition of this landscape?" Monthly practice: choose five species from each category and research their ecology in depth; for each, note food sources, predators, habitat requirements, succession role, response to disturbance; begin noticing associations — which species appear together, which never appear in the same place; add ecological notes to your iNaturalist observations. Key question for each species: If this species disappeared from my landscape tomorrow, what would change?
Months 5-6: Seasonal change — The same species, different season. Returning to the species you documented earlier in the year in a different season is the most important practice in this programme. The oak in leaf and the oak in winter are so different that knowing one does not mean knowing the other. Monthly practice: return to at least 20 of your documented species and observe them in the new seasonal conditions; for plants, note dormancy signs, seed dispersal, and any change in habitat association; for birds, note changes in behaviour, flock formation, migration arrivals and departures; for fungi, note which species have appeared that were absent in earlier months; for mammals, note seasonal behaviour changes — hibernation, range shifts, breeding activity. The question to hold: What does this species need from this season? What is the season giving it?
Months 7-8: Reading the landscape — From species to community. By this point, you have met most of your 100 species multiple times in multiple conditions. The next step is to begin reading the species community as a whole — to look at a patch of vegetation and understand not just its individual members but what they collectively indicate about the history and condition of the place. Monthly practice: choose three different habitat patches in your landscape — a disturbed area, a recovering area, and the least-disturbed area available; spend one hour in each, recording every species from your list that is present; compare the three lists — what is present in the least-disturbed area that is absent in the disturbed area? This comparison is a primitive form of ecological assessment — the foundation of restoration planning. The question to hold: What is this community of species telling me about what happened here?
Months 9-10: Deep knowing — The species you know least well. Review your iNaturalist records and identify the 15-20 species from your list that you have documented least frequently or feel least confident about. These become your focus for months 9 and 10. Monthly practice: spend deliberate time with each of the species you know least well; if possible, return to the same individual plants or the same location repeatedly; ask, what was I not seeing before? What is visible now that was not visible at the start of the year? This practice — returning to the things you know least well — is the opposite of the usual human tendency to spend time with what is already comfortable. It is the practice that produces genuine expertise rather than selective familiarity.
Months 11-12: Integration and extension. Monthly practice: walk your primary landscape route and notice how differently you see it compared to month one; write a simple species list for each major habitat type in your landscape — not from memory, but from observation; identify 20-25 new species you want to add to your programme in the second year; review your iNaturalist records as a whole — what patterns are visible across the year? The question to hold: What does this landscape need? What is missing that should be here? What is present that indicates something has been lost? These questions — asked from a position of genuine ecological knowledge rather than general concern — are the beginning of restoration thinking.
Part Three: Tools and Resources
iNaturalist: Making the most of the platform. Observation quality: iNaturalist's community identification system works best when observations include multiple photographs showing different features. For plants: whole plant, leaf (upper and lower surfaces), stem, any flowers or seeds present. For birds: any angle you can get. For fungi: cap, gills/pores, stem, base, substrate. The Research Grade threshold: An observation reaches Research Grade when it has been confirmed by two or more iNaturalist community members. Research-grade observations contribute to global biodiversity databases and scientific research. Over the course of a year, your programme will generate dozens of Research Grade observations — a genuine contribution to the scientific record of your landscape. Exploring your area: iNaturalist's Explore function lets you see all observations recorded by other users in your area. This is an excellent way to find species you have not yet encountered. Exact locations for plants are not given because some people poach plants.
Recommended approach to field guides. Field guides are tools, not curriculum. Use them to confirm observations you have already made, not as a substitute for field observation. The practice of looking carefully first and checking the guide second is fundamental to building genuine fluency rather than guide-dependent identification. Approach to any field guide: read the introductory sections on how to use the guide and what features to look for; learn the terminology for your group before trying to use the keys; use the guide to confirm, not to identify — form your own impression first. One good regional field guide for each of your four categories is sufficient. The depth of knowledge from one guide is more useful than superficial familiarity with five.
Camera traps. A basic camera trap — available online for $40-$80 USD — transforms the mammals-and-reptiles category of this programme. Deployed on a wildlife trail, at a water source, or along a fence line for one to two weeks, a camera trap will show you what is moving through your landscape in ways that direct observation never could. Basic deployment: position the camera facing along a trail or run, not head-on toward it; set to video mode rather than photo mode — behaviour is more informative than a still image; deploy at ground level (30-40 cm) for small mammals and reptiles, waist height for larger mammals; check weekly and move if the location is not producing results.
The field notebook. iNaturalist is your formal record. The field notebook is your thinking space. A small, weatherproof notebook kept in a jacket pocket becomes, over a year, one of the most valuable documents you own. Not because of the information in it — though that is real — but because of the habit of attention it represents. Simple sketches — even very rough ones — teach you to look more carefully than photographs alone. A format that works: Date · Location · Weather · Species observed with brief notes · One observation or question you want to return to.
Part Four: From Fluency to Practice
What you can do with what you know. After twelve months of this programme, you will be able to do things you could not do at the start. You will be able to walk a degraded site and read its history. The weed community tells you about the disturbance regime. The remnant species on the rocky outcrop or the old hedge tell you what the land was before. The absence of certain species tells you what has been lost. You will be able to select native species for planting with a genuine understanding of their ecology. Not just "this is native to my region" but "this species establishes well in disturbed soil, it is a preferred nesting site for three bird species I have documented in this landscape, and its berries are a food source for two of my 25 bird species in autumn." You will be able to monitor a restoration site effectively. Setting up photo points, running bird surveys, documenting plant community change over time — all of this requires a foundation of ecological literacy that this programme builds. You will be able to teach others. The person who has genuinely encountered 100 species in the field is a credible teacher for someone who has encountered none. You do not need a degree or a certification. You need to pay attention and be honest about what you know and what you are still learning.
Your second year. The 100-species programme is a beginning. Your second year might extend to 200 species. Or it might go deeper into 20 of the species you already know — learning to propagate them, to identify their mycorrhizal partners, to understand their role in the full successional arc of your local ecosystem. One principle to carry forward: The landscape is always teaching you, but only if you keep showing up. The annual repetition of attention — returning to the same places in the same seasons, year after year — is what produces the deep ecological knowledge that restoration work ultimately requires. Begin that walk. Return to it. Stay with it. The knowledge builds in the same way the soil does — slowly, through the accumulation of small things, over time.

Annual observation summary
At the end of twelve months, you will know 100 species. But more than that, you will have spent a year paying close attention to a specific place. That quality of attention, practised over a year, then another, then another, eventually becomes the ecological knowledge that restoration work requires. Not the Latin names. The attention. The recognition. The relationship. The land is there. It is waiting for you to learn to read it. Begin.
